Content Focus: Early Americas (Native Americans)

Workshop 1

The Natives of the Northeast were farmers, hunters, politicians, warriors, artisans, healers, and more! This workshop raises awareness of the strong sense of culture and tradition of the tribes in this region, including healing ceremonies of the shaman and storytelling with wampum belts.


Workshop 2

The Natives of the Southeast were farmers, hunters, fishermen, artisans, and warriors, with recognized political and spiritual leaders. This workshop explores the differences in ways of life based off of the geographic features of this region, including types of shelter and hunting tools/methods. We'll also explore spiritual beliefs of the totem! 


Workshop 3

There's nothing "plain" about this workshop! The Natives of the Great Plains were skilled hunters and always on the move. This workshop brings to light the importance of the bison, the healing powers of the shaman, and the unique advantages of tepees and earth lodges.


Workshop 4

The Natives of the Southwest lived amongst three great rivers and built a variety of homes. This workshop explores the Sonoran desert, silversmithing of the Navajo, Navajo language, Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, Native American folklore and even the famous Apache Chief Geronimo!

Workshop 5

The Natives of the Pacific Northwest lived moderate temperatures and damp climate that allowed plants and trees to flourish. This gave native peoples a steady source of food to add to their seafood diet. This workshop dives into the life cycle of the Pacific salmon, the importance of the great grizzly bear, the impact of Chief Joseph and students will even get to dissect some interesting folklore! 

Workshop 6

The Natives of the Arctic and Subarctic learned to thrive through long winters filled with deep snow and freezing temperatures. This workshop explores how these groups of people arrived on the continent, the types of food they ate in the frozen tundra, the importance of dog sleds and even learning about making tools and necessities out of animal bones and horns!
